What is a softphone?
A softphone is a software application that is installed on a device connected to the internet and allows you to make phone calls. Softphone software is usually provided by the VoIP provider and is a user-friendly interface that works just like a regular phone.
How does a softphone work?
Softphones behave just like traditional phones (think plastic desk phones) and landline phones, except that they use software to make calls. Because they run on software, they can do everything desk phones can do.
Softphones work on computers and mobile devices and can be integrated into many different platforms. Our desktop apps run on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems, and our mobile app is compatible with Android and iOS devices. Beyond calls, you can transfer, put on hold, and even switch calls to use your carrier’s network instead of the internet.
All you need to do is talk into your desktop device using a headset or mobile phone as normal. The softphone then mimics the functions of a desk phone, using VoIP phone technology (also known as voice-over-internet protocol) to facilitate voice calls over the internet.
Advantages of using a softphone
Portability
Softphones are by nature portable. Remote employees and frequent travelers can now have their business mobile phones with them wherever they are. You can make and take calls from anywhere as if you were in the office.
Portability also benefits internal office staff. Employees no longer need to be at the office to answer a call. On busy days, with many meetings away from the office, calls can be picked up from any device, anywhere in the building.
